FROM SELF-AWARENESS TO SOUL POWER: SPIRITUAL INTELLIGENCE EXPLAINED

06/05/2025

In a world often characterized by hurry, performance pressure, and external expectations, there is a growing need for a deeper understanding of ourselves and our place in the world. The model of Spiritual Intelligence (SQ), as introduced by Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall, offers a powerful lens to explore these deeper layers of consciousness and functioning.

In this blog, you will discover how you, as a coach, can use the principles of Spiritual Intelligence to guide your clients. Learn how to help them experience meaning, inspiration, and connection, and translate these feelings into choices and behaviors that contribute to both their personal growth and the greater well-being of society.

SQ: Distinguishing it from IQ and EQ

To understand the value of Spiritual Intelligence, it is crucial to distinguish it from the other, more familiar forms of intelligence:

  • IQ (Cognitive Intelligence): This measures how intelligent someone is. It concerns the rational mind, logic, analysis, and problem-solving capacity.

  • EQ (Emotional Intelligence): This measures how the client handles emotions—both their own and those of others. It determines empathetic capacity and relational skills.

  • SQ (Spiritual Intelligence): This measures the why behind one's actions. It is the existential, moral, and motivational basis of behavior.

SQ functions as the "foundation" or "master intelligence" that directs the other two. While a high IQ and EQ can lead to success, only SQ provides direction and meaning to this success and determines whether that success is employed ethically.

The Core of Spiritual Intelligence

According to Zohar & Marshall, spiritual intelligence consists of five core components that form the foundation for personal growth and a sense of purpose in life.

Self-Awareness and Inner Values

Spiritually intelligent individuals have a sharp sense of who they are, separate from societal roles or expectations. This self-awareness enables them to make choices aligned with their core values and personal beliefs. Coaches can help clients identify their authentic values and observe how these influence their daily actions, moving them away from "living for others" and toward living from within.

Meaning and Purpose

The ability to find meaning in life, even amidst challenges, is a central pillar of SQ. People with high spiritual intelligence can place events in a broader perspective and see a greater purpose. Supporting clients in discovering their sense of purpose is crucial; it helps them develop resilience and maintain a sense of direction, even during difficult times.

Responsability

SQ emphasizes that we are not merely passive participants in life, but active creators of our experiences who influence the well-being of others. The ability to take responsibility for both personal choices and collective impact strengthens leadership, ethical conduct, and social commitment. Coaches can make clients aware of the active role they play in their relationships and within larger social systems.

Transcendence

A core aspect of spiritual intelligence is the ability to transcend the ego and experience a deeper connection with the larger whole. This can manifest as a sense of unity with nature, humanity, or a broader cosmic connection. For therapeutic processes, this can help in dealing with existential questions, loss, or a sense of isolation by connecting to something greater than the individual self.

Compassion and Empathy

Spiritual intelligence includes the capacity for deep empathy and care for others. People with high SQ respond to the suffering of others with understanding and compassion rather than judgment or detachment. Developing relational skills and the capacity for interpersonal connection has a direct impact on well-being and healing within the coaching relationship.

The Q4 matrix: Levels of Functioning

Zohar and Marshall illustrate the power of SQ using the Q4 Matrix, which shows the relationship between SQ and EQ/IQ within the context of leadership and functioning. This matrix helps to identify how a person's internal "compass" (SQ) interacts with their external "competence" (IQ/EQ).

The goal of working with SQ is to move people toward Q4 (The Wise Leader), where self-awareness and competence converge to make authentic and impactful choices.

Practical Application: Journey to Inner Connection

Zohar & Marshall state that the goal of SQ work is to evolve from an unconscious (Q1, Q2) or imbalanced (Q3) level to Q4 (The Wise Leader). This requires active reflection and focused practice.

The following exercise is designed to guide you and your client in mapping their current Spiritual Intelligence and formulating concrete steps for growth.

Visual Reflection en Intuitive Focus

Begin by introducing the five dimensions of SQ. Ask the client to determine intuitively which dimension currently requires the most attention or holds the greatest potential for growth.

Have the client observe the dimensions (Self-awareness, Meaning/Purpose, Responsibility, Transcendence, Compassion).

Which one or two dimensions resonate the most or feel like the area where energy is currently stuck or where immediate growth is possible?

This intuitive choice creates a personal entry point and keeps development manageable, concrete, and meaningful.

Self-Inquiry Through the Five Dimensions

Use the reflection questions below as a guide to deeply explore the chosen dimensions. The focus is on transforming insight into action:

Self-Awareness and Inner Values

How well do you know your own thoughts, values, and beliefs?
To what extent are your daily decisions aligned with your deepest core values?
How can you strengthen your self-awareness and make the alignment with your values in your daily actions more conscious?
Action: Have the client choose one core value they want to integrate more consciously. Discuss a concrete behavior or choice that contributes to this.

Meaning and Purpose

What sense of meaning and purpose do you currently experience? What gives your life meaning and how do you see your role in the larger whole?
How can you create more meaning by consciously using your talents and passions?
Have the client formulate a short "meaningful intention" for a specific day or week (e.g., "My intention today is to contribute to connection by listening with full attention.")

Responsability

To what extent do you take responsibility for your own life, your emotional reactions, and your impact on the world?
How can you increase your personal responsibility?

Formulate one achievable action point (e.g., "I will take five minutes daily to consciously choose how I respond to stress, instead of reacting immediately.")

Transcendence

Have you experienced moments where you felt you transcended the ego and were connected to something larger?
How can you develop your capacity for transcendence and deepen your connection with others, nature, or the universe?

Invite the client to a short meditation or nature walk to observe the experience of unity and peace.

Compassion and Empathy

How much empathy and care do you have for others? How do you practice self-compassion when you make a mistake?
How can you show more compassion and empathy, both toward yourself and others?

Reflect on a recent situation involving self-criticism. Ask: "What would change if you looked at this with loving understanding?"

Integration and Action Plan

Conclude the session by reflecting on the journey together.

What is one concrete resolution or ritual you can implement in the coming week to strengthen the chosen quality?
